Results portals for clinical laboratories
For clinical laboratories, we build a portal where patients view and download their results securely, online booking of collection slots by site and time, and requests for home collection. Morning queues shrink and reception stops spending the day printing reports. The laboratory stays in control of who sees each result.
Typical problems
- At eight in the morning there is a queue outside the collection centre, full of fasting patients waiting their turn
- Patients phone to ask whether their results are ready, and reception spends time checking
- Home-collection requests come in by phone, without a full address or a copy of the test request
- Printing, posting and handing out paper results ties up staff and costs money every month
- Patients don't know how to prepare for each test and turn up without having fasted

A routine blood test, with no queue and no paper
A GP orders blood tests for a patient with high cholesterol. At home, the patient opens the laboratory's website, picks the collection centre nearest their office and books 7.45 on Thursday. The confirmation tells them to fast for twelve hours and to bring the test request.
On Thursday, they walk in at their booked time, give their sample and head to work. Once the report is validated, an e-mail arrives saying the result is ready, with no clinical details in the message. They sign in to the portal, download the PDF and share it with their GP through a link that expires after thirty days.
Collections for people who can't come in
For someone who is bedridden or has limited mobility, getting to a collection centre is hard. A son requests a home visit online on his father's behalf, attaches the test request and chooses Tuesday morning. The laboratory sees the request with the address and the form, groups visits by area and confirms an expected arrival time.
What the laboratory controls
- Slots per site, per day and per type of collection
- Preparation instructions attached to each test
- Results published only after technical validation
- Sharing with doctors, with an expiry date and an access log
- Home visits organised by area and by phlebotomist
- Payment by card, MB WAY, Multibanco, Apple Pay or Google Pay for private tests
Before the portal is connected to your laboratory system, a security and GDPR review checks that access rights and logs are sound. Read more about client portals, booking systems and document intelligence.
Frequently asked questions
How do patients access their results securely?
We design the portal so each patient signs in with their own credentials and a second factor, such as a text-message code, and sees only their own results. We plan for encrypted connections, an access log and doctor sharing with an expiry date. It is all built around the GDPR, which treats health data as a special category.
Does the portal connect to our laboratory information system?
That is the aim. If your system has an API or exports validated reports, the portal publishes them as soon as they are ready, with no manual step. We look at your system before proposing how to connect it.
Does slot booking mean no more walk-ins?
Not unless you want it to. You can set aside some slots for booking and keep the rest first come, first served. Patients who book choose the site and time and get preparation instructions, such as fasting, with their confirmation.
How do home-collection requests work?
The patient, or a relative, enters the address, uploads a photo of the test request and picks a time window. Your team confirms the request and plans the day's visits from one screen. With document intelligence, the details on the request can be extracted so staff only need to check them.
How much does a results portal cost?
There is no fixed price. Each laboratory gets a proposal written by hand, based on the number of collection sites, the link to your current system and the features you choose. Tell us about your set-up and we will send one. Request a quote
